Simple Ways to Start A Sustainable Life
So, I have been taking a break in writing a blog post, but here I am again, more ready than anything to finally bring up this topic that actually is a basic and fundamental ground that makes me start my blog since the very beginning. Before I start, I want to ensure that you all know the difference between ‘green living’ and ‘sustainable living’. While ‘sustainable’ is a more macro concept, both green living and sustainable one are strived to make the world a better living, for the nature itself and the people.
To start living more green and sustainable, you don’t have
to take a big action. I’m not saying on the process you are not allowed to join
the tree-hugger group, but to build the deep root and pure understanding within
you, start with few simple steps on how to start living more sustainable.
Start using essential oils
One of the most important steps in living sustainably is
getting rid of over-used chemical products on a daily basis. I know that not
all of those chemical thingies can be replaced just yet, but the usage of
essential oils can help you in few daily house chores. Essential oils are made
of renewable natural resources and have many abilities including replacing
bathroom and other house cleaners to kill bacteria, being an air freshener, and
even moisturizing your dry skin as well as being turned to alternative
chemical-free beauty products.
Give up bottled water
You might read this suggestion elsewhere a lot, because it
does really helps to build a sustainable life. A survey by Greenpeace found
that more than two million tonnes of throwaway plastic bottles are sold each
year and only less than 7% of which was recycled plastics. The irony here is
that all those companies producing bottled water use municipal water source –
tap water. So the question here is, why would you pay for the plastic bottle
when you can get the water all for free? Or cooler, use your own childhood
bottle.
Reduce your waste
Reducing the amount of waste you bring in and the amount of
trash that goes to the landfill is an important part of any sustainable
lifestyle.
Conserve energy
Energy scarcity is a real issue. As the growing population
of humans is increasing, energy is harder to produce and get. It accounts for
21.3 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide each year and over 90% of all greenhouse
gases. That’s right guys, when your mom told you to turn off the light when
it’s light outside or to turn off the air conditioner because the room is cold
enough to bear. Besides, you can use the allocated money for electricity bills
for another useful things.
Conserve water
An estimated of 50% of all household water usage is wasted.
It goes down the drain while we wait for it to warm up or evaporates quicker
than it needs to. In an era where our water supply is diminishing thanks to
drought and pollution, it’s important thing to conserve all the water we can.
Green your transportation
To be clear, all kind of sustainable modes of
transportations are those that don’t require energy or require as small energy
as possible. To commute in a short distance, try biking, riding public mass
rapid transportations, carpooling, or simply walking. And for long distance
travel, take the train or purchase carbon offsets which invest your money into
alternative energies.
Eat local, organic foods
Humans need foods to survive. And I hate to tell you this
but one day you might not be able to eat your favourite pizza because of the
infertile lands to produce wheat and grains. For your further information, most
of our meals come from a minimum of 1,500 miles away and some of what ends up
on your plate has traveled around the world to reach you. And way too much of
it is unhealthy to begin with.
Raise healthy, eco-conscious children
Most of you might go on bleak smile when it comes to talks
about children, but for some of you that planned to have one or two, raise your
kid right. In the future, humans will have to bear with harsh terrain of the
earth so prepare your next ancestries. Raising our kids to be healthy and aware
of environment is crucial.
Continue to educate yourself and others gently
Since sustainable living has to be done in a large scale to
really see impacts of it, it is important to educate yourself as well as other
people so that the concept can be a common sense and be done together. That is
one of my main reasons starting this blog, because I simply want to spread the
urge to live sustainably and also open for suggestions from other people
regarding of sustainable livings.
